Last Year’s Relegation Battle

With so much money involved at the top level of English football these days, some clubs simply cannot afford to be relegated. Last season, Leeds United, Leicester City, and Southampton dropped out of the top tier. Sheffield United took second and the final automatic promotion place. The Blades finished ten points behind the Clarets, but 11 points clear of third position.

All three promoted clubs have found the step up to the Premier League tough so far. As BBC reports, Sheffield United have already lost 8-0 at home this term. The three teams are in and around the bottom three heading into the second international break of the season.

Bournemouth defied the odds to stay in the top tier last term. However, they parted ways with Gary O’Neil, who subsequently took over at Wolves. Both teams are expected to be in the relegation picture this term.

Nottingham Forest have made a solid start under the popular Steve Cooper, while the likes of Brentford, Fulham, and Crystal Palace should have enough to finish in the top half of the table.

As we slowly but surely approach the busy winter period in the Premier League, things are starting to heat up in the title race, the battle for European spots, and the scrap for survival.

For the teams loitering towards the bottom of the table, this stage is particularly gruelling. However, with the transfer window opening at the start of 2024, the teams involved have a chance to bolster their squads for the second half of the campaign.
