Ukraine Security Service Arrests Local Officials for Helping Illegal Gambling

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has nabbed a local prosecutor and a national police chief in in the Smila Raion region for allegedly helping an illegal gambling business by accepting bribes.
The two accused had allegedly received more than UAH50,000 (€1,500) as bribe from an illegal gambling business for not reporting and punishing the business.
SBU has been conducting an investigation over the corruption allegations in association with the national police. The agencies will continue the investigation to find out whether more people were involved in the illegal operations.
It must be noted that Ukrainian government had banned gambling in 2009. Only last month did President Volodymyr Zelensky approved the new law to to legalise both land-based casinos and online gambling.
