Sydney opens market for new operator
As the casino market in Sydney is getting bigger with a new casino, traditional operators are ready to face the competition.
The casino market in Sydney is offering new opportunities to expand the industry in the country. Meanwhile, operator Star Entertainment Group is getting ready to face the expected competition. According to the company’s chairman John O’Neill, Star Entertainment Group is in a state of “eternal vigilance” regarding a new operator.
“Undoubtedly as Crown moves into the market they will be looking to recruit our relationship managers and the like but I am very comfortable with our management team and the board is eternally vigilant for competition when it arrives,” commented O’Neill. The chairman considers that the “main threat will come from its competitor poaching staff rather than poaching high rollers.”
“We are aware of what Crown will be offering at Barangaroo; we are aware that whilst it is called a VIP-only facility it will only have table games and the minimum bets will be as low as $20 – so its a bit generous to say its VIP-only,” Mr O’Neill added.
Star Entertainment Group currently holds the monopoly of the casino industry in Sydney. Its operations were threatened last year when authorities announced an investigation. However, the New South Wales Independent Liquor And Gaming Authority announced that they cleared The Star Entertainment Group Limited and that they can continue operating the Star Sydney casino. The facility was under investigation over allegations of violence to police.
