Sports betting to favour online gaming in the US
According to experts, if PASPA gets revoked by the US Supreme Court, sports betting could favour online gambling in those states that legalise it.
The gaming industry is on the verge of a major turn in the United States as the Supreme Court could revoke the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) and allow states to regulate sports betting themselves. According to experts, in case that happens, states that decide to legalise the segment will also see online gambling undergo an expansion process.
The director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement David Rebuck said: “ If we win sports wagering, online gaming will go to every state that adopts sports betting.” He also added that online gambling could “explode” in case the segment gets cleared and said it will “follow right behind [sports betting].”
According to Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, nearly 20 states will annalyse bills like those adopted in Pennsylvania and Connecticut to regulate sports betting next year. Those 20 could turn into even more in case the Supreme Court decides to rule in favour of the segment.
“It makes a lot of sense to offer sports betting over the internet,” added the Director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Las Vegas-Nevada and said: “Once you have the systems for letting people bet on sports in place, it isn’t a huge step to permit them to bet on casino games or poker as well.“
