Delhi high court favours rummy

The Delhi high court has ruled that playing popular card game rummy with small stakes at a club isn’t gambling.
Rummy has been cleared by the Delhi high court, which has ruled that playing the popular card game with small stakes at a club is not gambling. The ruling came after an appeal filed by Mr Suresh Kumar, who challenged a court order that forced him to pay US$46.5k for filing a false police complaint that accused the Central Secretariat Club of allowing gambling within its .
Lower court’s justice Valmiki Mekta made an observation to the high court and explained: “The trial court, in my opinion, also has rightly held that merely because a the card game was played in the club premises with small stakes from a few annas to some rupees would not make it gambling as held by the Supreme Court.”
As Mr Kumar happens to be a former employee who was fired from the club, both courts considered it was frustration what led him to file the police complaint.
“I completely agree with the discussion, reasoning and conclusion of the trial court because the complaint filed by the appellant (Mr Kumar) was on account of his frustration of having been removed from the services of the club and the allegations made by him were not bonafidely made…,” justice Mekta said.
