Many arrested in gambling crackdown in Turkey
In an unprecedented nation-wide crack-down of gambling activities in the Turkey, the National Police have raided thousands of businesses and arrested 80 people.
In coordinated searches, about 8000 policemen inspected coffeehouses and similar venues where they suspected gambling activities were taking place, and closed down 36 businesses.
Police also closed down 36 businesses where the parlours were located and issued fines. Gambling was banned in Turkey in 1998 but illegal gambling houses survive to this day.
