Ponca tribe reveals name of new Carter Lake casino
The native american tribe wants the casino to be up and running by late October in Iowa.
The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska announced that the casino planned for Carter Lake, Iowa, is set to be named Prairie Flower Casino. The tribe said that they intend for the casino to be open in late October this year.
The 10,000-square-foot casino being built on the tribe’s sovereign land is expected to feature around 200 slot machines in its first phae, but no table games. The casino will feature a full-service bar along with a snack bar, and will employ approximately 100 people, according to a release from the tribe announcing the casino’s name.
Ponca Tribe of Nebraska Chief Larry Wright Jr. stated: “With its name, we honour our Tribe’s past and the sacrifices our people made, while charting a new path of prosperity for our Tribe. The Prairie Flower Casino will allow us to better serve our members while bringing economic development and growth to the Carter Lake region.”
Phase one of the casino will feature a 9,500 square-foot space with 200 slot-style games. While there won’t be table games, the tribe is already planning an extension for the facility.
Nevertheless, an effort to block the casino is currently under review by a federal judge, as the location of the facility has been under discussions by authorities of both Iowa and Nebraska.
“Hopefully this economic development over in this area that hasn’t seen anything in my lifetime, it’s been a vacant grass field, I mean, we’re looking to bring jobs, a little destination, recreation and opportunity for that area.” – said Carter Lake Mayor Ron Cumberledge.
