Sports betting boosts Denmark’s economic growth

The betting industry in Denmark grew by 11.5 per cent during the second quarter, thanks mainly to the FIFA Football World Cup in Russia.
Denmark’s gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden reports that both sports betting and the opening-up of betting on horse racing to all licensed operators were the main drivers of the period’s €218.5 million GGR. Sports betting posted nearly €87 million during the three months to June 30 and grew 24.1 per cent year-on-year, thanks to a 6.2 per cent stakes increase thanks to the FIFA World Cup.
The report showed that 48.7 per cent of the total revenue came through mobile platforms, while land-based bookmakers were second at 33.6 per cent and desktop sites posted the other 17.6 per cent.
Furthermore, online casino saw GGR increase by 17.4 per cent from last year’s second quarter to €72 million. Slots accounted for 61.6 per cent of total casino revenue in the period.
