Italy to issue online gambling licenses before Christmas

Italy’s ongoing process of license issuing will culminate by this year end. The officials in the country’s gambling regulator Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM) are checking and verifying the documents provided by the gambling companies as part of the license application process. It is very much likely that licenses will be issued before Christmas this year. The licenses will be valid through 31 December 2022.
News from Italy arrives just as the country is gearing up for a recently approved ban on all forms of gambling advertising. The ban, promoted by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio, will come into force 1 January 2019.
Italy’s gambling regulator ADM launched the application process for online gaming and betting licenses in January after months of delays. Said process was originally expected to be launched last September.
The original plan of the ADM was to provide 12 licenses. The one-off application fee was €200,000. The amount of €24 million was thus expected to enter Italy’s coffers only from the application process.
However, only 70 companies applied for 80 licenses overall were submitted.
