Swedish Regulator Proposes to Limit Football Betting

Spelinspektionen, the gambling regulator in Sweden, has proposed to limit football betting in the country as part of efforts to reduce match-fixing.
The proposed restrictions would mean that operators could only offer betting markets on the country’s top four football divisions.
For the Swedish Cup, only matches featuring teams from the four leagues can be offered as betting markets. International games would be restricted to under-21 games and up while wagering on training matches and friendlies would be forbidden.
The regulator has also implied that these regulations could be introduced across other sports, too.
The regulator will go through a consultation period inviting industry stakeholders to share their thoughts from May 6. The consultation comes at a time when concerns are being raised over the current restrictions in place, with some suggesting they are forcing players towards unlicensed, off-shore sites.
