Apple sued over gambling apps in App Store
Reading Time: 2 minutes

In America, a so-called class-action lawsuit has been filed against Apple. The plaintiff claims that Apple is profiting from the provision of illegal gaming apps made by the company Zynga. The lawsuit was filed on February 16 this year by attorney Kiesha Lowe on behalf of a group of duped parties, as noted by the authoritative AppleInsider. The documents outline how the group believes that the gambling apps in the Apple App Store are breaking the law in a series of states where Internet gambling is banned. Lowe accuses Apple of profiting from the sale of the apps because it receives a commission for each sale on the Apple App Store.

Zynga

The case specifically involves apps from the company Zynga. Zynga became best known for games like FarmVille and Words with Friends but also has numerous games in the App Store that revolve solely around gaming. For example, the company offers Wizard of Oz Slots, Game of Thrones Slots, among others. With these apps, players can play on virtual slots but since one cannot cash out, the apps are simply available in the US app store. Thus, although players cannot convert their won credits to cash, there is a currency exchange involved in the apps. In fact, players can buy extra credits through in-app purchases, known as micro transactions. Attorney Lowe writes that the apps violate the law in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Social casinos

In Europe a lawsuit like this wouldn’t stand much of a chance. As we are aware of this phenomenon and call it social casinos. All the games, even the casino games, are played for free. This also means there are no cash outs available either. However, it is possible to buy extra credits. Buying this will never entitle you to a pay-out though. It will only entitle you to more rounds of the same game. As in social casinos it’s customary to receive a set amount of rounds per hour or per day, you have to wait if you want to play more. Or buy extra credits in this case. It’s funny to see how Americans can take offense in this harmless business model. Maybe instead of suing Apple, they should make sure that people get informed before they start playing. That would avoid a lot of deceptions.
