Online gambling operators join forces to increase knowledge about the gambling market
Four of Sweden’s largest gambling operators are joining forces to increase awareness about the Swedish gambling market through the launch of the new information website, ‘Fakta om spel’ (facts about gambling). The site’s ambition is to be a central database for facts and statistics about the licensed Swedish gambling market, be easily accessible and thus encourage more fact-based debates. Some of Sweden’s largest operators are behind the initiative in collaboration with the Swedish Association for Online Gambling (BOS).
Since January 2019, the Swedish gambling market has been re-regulated and open to licensed operators to offer their products to Swedish consumers. Today, some 100 operators have a license to operate in Sweden with joint revenues of about SEK 15 billion and contribute approximately SEK 3 billion in gambling taxes every year.
Knowledge about the Swedish gambling market is generally low and there are often misconceptions about how the market is regulated, what requirements a license entails, and how the market is developing. ‘Fakta om spel’ will be a place where visitors can, among other things, access independent information about the gambling industry, learn about what the duty of care entails, get recent statistics on taxes and marketing, learn more on how the self-exclusion or session/deposit limits work, read about different types of games, get the latest statistics, as well as access published research and reports.
“It is important that we have an open and free debate about the gambling market. By launching ‘Facts about gambling’ we hope to contribute to a more fact-based debate and encourage increased cooperation within the gambling industry and with other important stakeholders. The idea is that the site expands over time and we would like to see more organisations get behind this initiative. We know that increased knowledge contributes to a healthier, safer and fairer gambling market by highlighting the benefits of a licensed market, but also highlighting the important challenges that the industry, authorities, politicians and suppliers need to jointly focus on,” says Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of BOS.
Facts about gambling have been created and financed by the online gambling operators Betsson, Kindred Group, LeoVegas, and William Hill in collaboration with the Industry Association for Online Gambling (BOS). All information on the website is based on official sources and reports.
