PAGCOR Funds Construction of Modern Sports Facilities in Southern Leyte
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (PAGCOR) has donated PHP53.2m for the construction of modern sports facilities in the city of Maasin.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the building of the sports facilities – composed of an oval track, tennis court and a basketball court – was held at Barangay Tam-is. The event was graced by PAGCOR executives from the agency’s Corporate Social Responsibility Group as well as the local executives of Maasin.
According to Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado, the sports facilities which will soon be constructed in their city will be beneficial in their promotion of grassroots sports and in the training of their local athletes who will take part in various prestigious national and international athletic competitions.
“We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to PAGCOR, most especially to Chairman and CEO Andrea Domingo for helping us realize our dream of having standard sports facilities in our city,” he said.
The local chief executive added that the facilities would help spur economic growth in Maasin as they will be utilised to welcome tourists and visitors who are involved in sports activities.
Meanwhile, PAGCOR Chairman Andrea Domingo said the state-run gaming firm has been fully supporting programmes that aid in the training and development of local athletes in the hope of producing more potential athletic talents that could put the country in the global sports map.
“The only way for us to sustain the success of our athletes in the international sports scene is to provide them modern facilities in the community level where they could train comfortably and competitively,” she said.
