PlayOJO’s top games data hints at new trend in online casino play
iGaming is leaning into the true meaning of ‘gaming’, says PlayOJO Co-Founder
New data from UK online casino PlayOJO offers an inside take on rapidly changing casino landscape in 2024. Although established categories such as online slots and roulette continue to be most popular, new formats that emphasise gaming and entertainment are a major trend for 2024.
Live game shows
Live casino games were the big movers in 2023 with games like Lightning Roulette and Crazy Time breaking into the top 50 most popular games for the first time.
Recent data from PlayOJO shows that if anything, the live casino trend is gaining pace, and live game shows in particular may be the fastest-growing format online.
In the last three months alone, the landscape of games has changed dramatically, with 34% of the top 50 games coming from the live casino category, up from 5% in 2023. The number of live game shows in the top 50 has tripled.
Live casino provider Evolution Gaming is a major driving force behind the emergence of live game shows, and its upcoming Lightning Storm and Monster Mash titles are expected to boost the format’s popularity.
Another provider, Eeze, is set to advance the category further with the yet-to-be-released Fantastique World, a live game show developed with Unreal Engine, the technology behind video games such as Gears of War, featuring AI-powered virtual hosts.
Crash games
Crash games were first popularised in crypto gaming, but in 2023 the format was still virtually unknown in the mainstream iGaming sector, with Aviator by Scribe the only crash game to break through in the UK.
Now, this unusual format of casino game is being developed by leading game providers including Playtech, Pragmatic Play and Relax Gaming.
PlayOJO’s crash games: – Currently offers 15 games – More games set for release this year – FlyX from Games Global is the most popular crash game – Cash or Crash from Evolution Gaming is a new contender for top UK crash game
iGaming is really leaning into the true meaning of ‘gaming’ and it’s great to see innovation like this. I think it’s interesting that both concepts came from outside the traditional online casino world. Live game shows take successful features from the TV and entertainment worlds, and Crash is a unique format that presents players with interesting tactical decisions. They both deliver lots of fun but in completely different ways, and we feel that’s what players are looking for this year.
