Big Bass Day at the Races Joins Long List of Horse Racing Inspired Slot Games

The Spring is boomtime for horse racing in Great Britain and Ireland.
There’s the Cheltenham Festival each March, the Grand National in April and, before you know it, the Flat season is upon us.
Racing fans on European soil may have to wait until October for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but Pragmatic Play has softened the blow with the release of Big Bass Day at the Races – the latest iteration in their (normally) aquatic-themed slot franchise.
To celebrate these golden months of horse racing, here’s a rundown of some of the slots inspired by the sport.
Big Bass Day at the Races
Replacing the fishing rods and tackle boxes – a mainstay of the Big Bass series – are champagne buckets, pints of beer and binoculars.
Released in March 2024 at several online casinos, such as NYSpins, Big Bass Day at the Races is a traditional slot that features a free spins round and a 10,000x top prize.
A seasonal release, casinos can leverage the increased interest in horse racing at this time of year – for example, the NYSpins bonus delivers a 100% deposit match, which equine lovers may well just use on Big Bass Day at the Races if they get bitten by the racing bug in the springtime.
Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven
One of a handful of horse racing slots with a progressive jackpot attached, Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven features a two-tiered top prize.
The game takes its name from one of the most extraordinary days in sport, let alone racing. Frankie Dettori, the eponymous jockey, rode all seven winners on the card at Royal Ascot on September 28, 1996 – a feat never achieved before or since.
Unsurprisingly, the number seven features prominently throughout this Playtech slot – not least that 7,777x bounty.
Big Racing
Cayetano Gaming released Big Racing in March 2023 – you guessed it, just a couple of days ahead of the Cheltenham Festival.
They took the standard horse racing slot template and ran with it, delivering a game that matched traditional slot gaming with some unique touches – for instance, a horse symbol landing on the reels adjacent to the finishing position marker instantly turns wild, substituting for all other main game symbols to potentially create new wins.
All wilds are collected in the progress bar, which is filled to the brim once 25 wilds have been accumulated. This triggers a bonus feature – a pick ‘em game that allows players to pick a horse and win a prize if they finish first, second or third.
AP McCoy Sporting Legends
Jockeys often become just as big a star as the horses that they ride – first Frankie, then AP McCoy were used as inspiration for slot games bearing their name.
Born Tony McCoy but better known as AP, the Irishman saddled more than 4,000 winners during his stellar career – nobody in Britain has ever ridden more.
Part of the Sporting Legends series from Playtech, this game is also connected to a progressive jackpot network and boasts the 243 ways to win mechanic.
Slot developers have long used horse racing for inspiration – and they show no sign of slowing down in the final furlong.
