Unregulated online betting in Sweden account for a quarter of the country’s total gambling revenue

Recent reports from H2 Gambling Capital, which provides the most trusted data and intelligence on the global gambling industry and Lotteriinspektionen, the Swedish gambling regulator highlight that the unregulated online betting market account for a quarter of the country’s total gambling revenue.
In 2017, Sweden’s market was worth €2.2 billion, while proceeds from the unregulated segment reached €544.8 million.
As per the revealed data sports betting services represented a 42 percent share of the unregulated market last year, while online casino games leapt to 40 percent, having been just 21 percent in 2008. However, online poker could not keep up and accounted for just seven percent of the market, while it represented 20 percent of the market in 2008 after the poker boom.
Meanwhile, other online gaming services accounted for 11 percent of the market, hiking from nine percent in 2008.
According to Lotteriinspektionen, the €544.8 million total revenue from the unregulated market was up 13 percent from 2016, turning the segment into Sweden’s major propellant of growth in gambling.
