California proposes amendment to sports betting legislation

California has proposed to add an amendment to the 2020 election ballot in the state that would allow voters vote on the state’s sports betting legalisation.
The president, of consultants Competitive Edge Advantage Inc., Russell Lowery has announced he’s pushing to get sports betting on the November 2020 election ballot in California. His aim is to get 500,000 signatures for the proposed Gaming Fairness and Accountability Act in order to get the amendment in voters’ hands.
Mr Lowery says he spoke only with “in-state gaming interests, out-of-state gaming interests and the sports leagues” and revealed to the Los Angeles Times that he found “enough interest to try and build a coalition” they’re calling Californians for Sports Betting. That could mean that the state could finally get the segment up and running after the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).
Despite the apparent support Mr Lowery has gathered, the state’s tribal gaming operators have already voiced their opposition to any potential efforts to legalise sports betting in case card rooms were involved. Therefore, the amendment that would “authorise banking and percentage games including and not limited to sports wagering,” could face tough hurdles before any eventual progress.
