Episode One: Tom Scudamore stars in Episode One, discusses celebrating nuns and his dream ride that never was, Vautour

Former National Hunt jockey Tom Scudamore reflects on his glittering career in the saddle and among his tales he recalls his first racing memory, the moment when his Catholic school teacher cheered home his dad’s 1988 Champion Hurdle win on Celtic Shot.

“I remember being picked up from school and we were sat in the car listening to the radio,” Scudamore said. “I was at a Catholic school at the time and as Celtic Shot crossed the line, my teacher, who was a nun, came flying across the road waving her arms. She wouldn’t have had a bet on it for a number of reasons, however she must have followed the racing and found some divine inspiration from my father’s success that day.”

The 41-year-old rode against some of racing’s greats such as Kauto Star and Denman but it was the Willie Mullins-trained Vautour who Scudamore really wanted to have sat on.

“There were so many different horses which I loved throughout the different generations,” Scudamore said. “I had huge affection for both Kauto Star and Denman but the one I would have most liked to have sat on would be Vautour, a horse unfortunately who never got to fully prove his potential.

“When he won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2014, it was the best performance I ever got beaten by. The gallop he was able to maintain would’ve won the Champion Hurdle that year. He was just so exuberant and looked like he would’ve been a lot of fun to ride.”

Self-confessed music fanatic Scudamore also picked The Rolling Stones as the song that best describes the Cheltenham Festival for him.

“If the Cheltenham Festival was a song, it would be ‘Start Me Up’ by The Rolling Stones,” Scudamore said. “When I went to see the Stones, they opened with this and when Keith [Richards] played that first chord with the fireworks, it reminds me of the roar when the tape goes back for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle; an amazing moment.”

“We are very lucky at Square in the Air to work with some of the biggest names in horse racing and we thought we could use our relationship with them to help the Injured Jockeys Fund; a charity that does such great work for the racing industry,” the Managing Director for Square in the Air, Bill Esdaile, said. “We’ve got some fantastic guests including Tom and Peter Scudamore, Barry Geraghty and Harry Cobden and the stories they tell through music are brilliant. It’s a great way to learn more about several racing idols, ahead of a celebration in racing this spring.

“We plan to carry the feature over to the flat season and as a business we will donate at least £5,000 to a wonderful cause.”

“We are grateful to Square in the Air for supporting the Injured Jockeys Fund with its new podcast, Disc Jockeys,” the Chief Executive for the Injured Jockeys Fund, Lisa Hancock, said. “They’ve got some great guests involved and we’ve no doubt each show will be fun and informative to listen to. We are hugely grateful for the donation each episode will provide.”

“This is a unique series that combines the best memories of some of the biggest names in racing with some of their favourite music tracks,” Barnett said. “It’s the perfect combination of music and conversation podcast for every racing fan around the world.

“I feel very honoured to have the opportunity to chat to such leading names in the horse racing industry, allowing the audience a chance to discover so much more about our guests, both on and off the racecourse, while knowing they’re helping to donate to a wonderful charity in the Injured Jockeys Fund.”
