ASA Bans BetIndex Ad Featuring Underage Players

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has sanctioned BetIndex for featuring five footballers aged under 25 in an advert. The ASA ruled that the ad must not appear again.

In May, BetIndex published a paid-for Facebook ad featuring the images of many footballers including England internationals 19-year-old Jadon Sancho, 24-year-old Raheem Sterling, 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi, 21-year-old Marcus Rashford and French international 20-year-old Kylian Mbappé.

The UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising and Direct & Promotional Marketing (CAP Code) states that no one who is or appears to be under 25 years old may be featured playing a significant role in gambling marketing communications that are shown outside of the operator’s facility or website.

BetIndex argued that the under-25 players’ role in the ad was not significant, as it included many players and that the players were used to illustrate the features of the platform and what consumers would see if using the app.

However, the ASA disagreed, ruling that all of the footballers in the ad played a significant role.

“We understood the intention of the ad was to illustrate the nature of the gambling app and how it could be played,” the ASA said.

Prior to the ruling, BetIndex had withdrawn the ad and said they would ensure staffs receive relevant training on the use of sportspeople under 25 years of age in marketing communications.

Virtuix, developer of the Omni virtual reality treadmill and Omni Arena, has unveiled “Blackbeard: The Trials of Skull Island,” its latest game for the Omni Arena VR attraction.

The game can be played by up to four people, who will be challenged to take on the role of pirates and work as a team to find treasure and fight enemies as they battle for the top spot on the leaderboard.

Players will go through four separate rounds during the game, including a puzzle challenge where they must work together and a final showdown with the boss. This variety encourages a high level of repeat play.

“Blackbeard is Omni Arena’s most kid-friendly game to date. It’s also a blast for adults and esports players. We designed the game for high repeat play. It’s easy for everyone to play, but thanks to its variety and depth, it’s hard to master. No two rounds are ever the same,” Jan Goetgeluk, founder and CEO of Virtuix, said.

The new game will be a part of Virtuix’s weekly and monthly esports tournaments for the Omni Arena. Teams who reach the top of the world leaderboard will win cash prizes from the $100,000 prize pool, sponsored by Virtuix and HP.
