IBIA and Speel Verantwoord sign cooperation agreement on betting and integrity

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and the Netherlands online gambling trade body Stichting Speel Verantwoord (SSV) have signed a partnership agreement providing a framework for cooperation and coordination between the two bodies. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will see the associations work on projects aimed at promoting and establishing viable regulated betting markets with high consumer channelling and related consumer, sports and operator integrity protection measures. Joint activity will be particularly focused on the Netherlands as it moves towards the opening of its online gambling market from mid-2021.

Peter-Paul de Goeij, Managing Director of the SSV, said “There are a significant number of companies that are members of both associations and there is clear benefit for our two bodies from working closely in the lead up to the introduction of the remote gambling law. Whilst both associations welcome the opening of the market, the law places a number of restrictions on certain betting products on integrity grounds, which both the SSV and IBIA have questioned; there is a general concern about the impact on consumer channelisation and market viability.”

Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, said: “The Netherlands law presents a number of opportunities and challenges for operators concerning the availability of betting and related integrity issues. We will be seeking to work closely with the SSV to establish a working relationship with policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss those issues in more detail and to ensure that the market opening is successful. This includes supporting the licensing requirement for all sports betting operators to be a member of an integrity monitoring body, and where the Dutch law specifically mentions IBIA as a best practice model.”

GVC Appoints Dr. Mark Griffiths as Special Adviser on Player Protection and Safer Gambling Issues

GVC Holdings has appointed online gambling addiction specialist Dr. Mark Griffiths as a special adviser on player protection and safer gambling issues.

Dr. Mark Griffiths, Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addiction and Psychology at Nottingham Trent University, will audit GVC’s policies and processes on responsible gaming and suggest improvements. He was a part of the World Health Organisation working party that formally recognised “gaming disorder” as a psychological condition last year.

Last week, GVC’s CEO Shay Segev set out his direction for the Group, focusing on two strategic pillars of sustainability and growth, underpinned by the Group’s industry-leading proprietary technology. This included a commitment, under the new Sustainability Charter, to continue to lead the industry on responsible gambling.

A core part of this is the launch of the Advanced Responsibility & Care (ARC) programme. The ARC programme encompasses scientific analysis of player behaviour to inform the enhancement of player protections. GVC’s data scientists then derive predictive models and analytics to score players for potential indicators of protection. Each player has a dynamic risk rating aligned to their play patterns and other criteria to enable real-time monitoring and analysis tools to enable early interventions to improve player protection.

Professor Griffiths’ work will be instrumental in delivering ARC. He will work with the business to apply findings from the behaviours of over 160 million players on GVC’s global database to help develop stronger rules, measures and interventions. He will also draw on GVC’s existing multi-million-dollar partnership with Harvard Medical School, now two years into a five-year study into addiction.

BtoBet has released its latest industry report “A product-centric vs player-centric approach; How player requirements are reshaping the iGaming landscape.” The report highlights the requirement to increase player lifetime value.

The report seeks to address how the European market is reacting to an increased level of player requirements, how a tailored UX can be important for operators as they seek to retain customer loyalty, and also how a product-centric approach could be detrimental for licensees in the iGaming industry.

The report also emphasises how a tailored experience will result in an increase for each player’s Lifetime Value (LTV), whilst guiding operators on key scenarios that they must address in order to gain a competitive advantage on their competition, amongst which:

  • How they are responding to the player-driven market;
  • How well do they know their customers;
  • How loyal are their customers;
  • Whether they have the technological means to provide a tailored betting experience in a truly interlinked omnichannel environment capable to adapt and include the latest technological and behavioural traits.
