Nairobi high court judge James Makau has suspended the ban on gambling ads after the musician Muriji Kamau Wanjohi complained that the ban robbed him of his right to make celebrity endorsements.

Wanjohi argued that the ban deprived him of income since he “earns a living thorough endorsement of products and services due to his influence and celebrity status”.

The government brought in a raft of new regulations earlier this month – including bans on such endorsements and advertising on social media – saying the rapidly growing industry was harming the young and the poor.

According to the interior ministry, the gaming industry in Kenya has grown substantially over the last five years, to 200 billion shillings ($1.98 billion) from 2 billion.

The German state of Schleswig-Holstein has passed a bill that allows the current online gambling regulatory regime to remain in place until mid-2021.

The successful regulation of online gambling on the territory of Germany has proved quite the challenge over the past seven years. The latest version of the Interstate Treaty on Gambling was introduced this year and was presented to the European Commission for a review earlier this month. An approval from EU authorities is one of the necessary steps before the law takes effect at a federal level.

The Schleswig-Holstein has been allowed to implement its own regulatory framework that will stay in effect until June 30, 2021. The framework’s extended validity was voted in favour of by the state’s Greens, Free Democratic Party, South Schleswig Voters’ Association, Christian Democratic Union party, and the Alternative for Germany party.

GambleAware has launched a nationwide mobile barbershop tour, the latest strand of their “Bet Regret” safer gambling campaign. This is not a regular barbershop. It is having top of the range barbers, trained in discussing Bet Regret and raising awareness about the risks of placing impulsive bets.

The tour kicked off in Manchester. The Bet Regret Barbershop will now travel to venues with a large number of sports bettors, including sporting events, university campuses and city centres, talking to sports fans about Bet Regret. On the tour, experienced barbers will encourage young male sports fans who bet to learn more about Bet Regret and reflect on their own betting behaviours while receiving a free haircut.

“As barbers, we are used to our customers opening up to us about personal topics that they wouldn’t typically discuss. I’m looking forward to touring the country and chatting openly to fellow sports’ fans about their betting behaviour, raising awareness about Bet Regret. We will be shining a spotlight on bets they might immediately regret, promoting conversations between friends, with the ambition of encouraging bettors to reduce higher risk betting so that their future betting is safer and less impulsive,” Nick Maclure, one of the resident barbers on the mobile barbershop for GambleAware said.

“This is an important way to engage with communities across the country and open discussions with sports bettors, enabling them to consider the risks involved with betting and reflect on it. With our barbers, people will have the opportunity not only to receive a haircut, but also develop their understanding of Bet Regret and consider their betting behaviour in the future,” Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware said.
