Meet the Pro Gamers Changing their Game in Aid of the Anthony Nolan Blood Cancer Charity

The United Kingdom’s leading blood cancer and blood disorder charity, Anthony Nolan, has announced its latest partnership with Guild Studios, the home of some of the world’s best professional gamers and content creators.

The pair have joined forces to launch the Match for a Match Cup, a FIFA tournament with a difference that will see pros, not usually known for playing the football video game, quite literally change their game, stepping out of their comfort zone to contest a competitive one-off knockout tournament.

The announcement comes as Anthony Nolan continues its work to inspire 16 to 24-year-olds to join the stem cell register, a vital cause in helping to save the lives of people living with blood cancer or blood disorders. This young demographic is vital to the charity’s work as they are more likely to be a match and offer the best chance of saving a life. What’s more, it’s easy to do as joining the stem cell register takes less time than a standard twelve-minute game of FIFA.

Crossing the (virtual) white line in the Match for a Match Cup will be co-star of the Jaack Maate’s Happy Hour podcast and Guild content creator Stevie White, who as a self-confessed FIFA novice is excited to ‘embarrass himself for a good cause’. Joining Stevie will be ‘Anas’ El-Abd, a pro Fortnite eSports player that previously won MrBeast’s $1,000,000 tournament, but how will those skills transfer to the football pitch?

Among others lining up to take their shot is content creator and Twitch streamer Harrie Silver, best known for her lifestyle content but now answering the call to take on the world’s biggest football video game. Completing the line-up will be Henrik ‘Hen’ Mclean, a British/Lithuanian Fortnite player that, at just 17 years old, has already amassed an impressive roster of career wins. Mclean has described himself as a casual FIFA player and is excited to hone his skills on a more competitive level.

The Match for a Match Cup will be hosted by presenter Iain Chambers, who fronts some of the biggest eSports tournaments all around the world. Joining Chambers will be TN25, a Guild content creator that specializes in FIFA, with the pair bringing you all the action and match commentary from the tournament.

Partnering with Guild, a key pillar of the gaming industry is the perfect way for Anthony Nolan to reach more individuals with 71% of people between the ages of 16 to 24 playing regularly online. Gaming has also been a solace in tough times for a number of patients including Rian Harvey, who was just 14 years old when he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid leukemia. With so many months in hospital and a long isolation period after a stem cell transplant, Harvey says that gaming ‘saved him’ as he navigated his route to recovery.

“In fewer than the twelve minutes it takes to complete a match on FIFA, a young man could sign up to the stem cell register,” the Senior Digital Marketing Manager for Anthony Nolan, Matt Allen, said. “Currently 18% of the UK Anthony Nolan stem cell register is made up of young men but they account for 55% of people called upon to donate.

“By putting on an exciting event with some of the world’s most decorated eSports players trying their hand at something new, we’re excited to shine a light on young people’s ability to try something new themselves, which could have life-saving results.”

“Guild’s appeal to the notoriously hard-to-reach Gen Z demographic makes us the perfect partner for Anthony Nolan as it looks to encourage more 16 to 24-year-olds to join the stem cell register,” the Senior Vice-President for Guild Esports, Nick Westwood, said. “Together, not only will we be offering an evening of entertainment, but hopefully will inspire young gamers to step out of their comfort zone and, in doing so, make an impact on the issue of blood cancer and blood disorders.”

All the action will be streamed live on the Guild Twitch channel. Viewers will be inspired by in-tournament interviews with patients, survivors and donors from the charity who will look to inspire the next generation of game changers by telling their stories.

* The Match for a Match Cup will see professional gamers and content creators from the likes of Fortnite take part in a FIFA tournament to support the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders.

* The partnership with Guild Studios, co-owned by David Beckham, will look to inspire 16 to 24-year-olds to step out of their comfort zone and join the stem cell register.

* The self-confessed FIFA novices are currently in training for the event that will take place at Guild’s headquarters in London.

* The tournament will be streamed live on the Guild Twitch channel from 6pm on Tuesday 25th April 2023.

LEC Introduces Sporting Financial Regulations

To support the long-term financial stability and competitive balance of the LEC, the league is going to introduce new financial regulations – known as Sporting Financial Regulations (SFR) – for the start of the 2024 LoL Esports Season.

The LEC SFR will encourage teams to maintain the total sum of its five highest-paid player salaries below a certain threshold, with teams exceeding the threshold having to pay an excess fee (SFR Fee).

In doing so, the LEC seeks to create a financially sustainable environment for its pro players, partnered teams, and the league itself, allowing all parties to grow at a healthy and scalable pace, and protect the ecosystem from unsustainable spending practices. In addition, the framework will support the league by creating a better competitive balance and more engaging competition, further enhancing the experience for players and fans.

“In the current economic climate, we are dedicated more than ever to creating a sustainable future for our players, teams, and the LoL Esports ecosystem in EMEA as a whole. The LEC SFR, which will come into effect from the beginning of the 2024 Season, is one way in which we’re continuing to work towards our goal of long-term financial sustainability. By doing this, we aim to encourage teams to operate more sustainable businesses to provide job security for players and ensure we serve our fans for decades to come,” said Maximilian Peter Schmidt, Director of League of Legends Esports EMEA.

SFR will encourage each team to maintain the total sum of salaries (known as SFR Spend) paid to the top five highest-paid players in a team within a certain range. The range includes both an upper spending threshold (SFR Threshold) and a lower spending threshold (SFR Floor), with the lower spending threshold amounting to 50% of the SFR Threshold. Meanwhile, the SFR Threshold is calculated based on a number of considerations, including LEC player salaries, League Revenue Pool of the current and forecasted years, team financial data – such as revenue and expenses – and other market indicators. Teams that exceed the SFR Threshold will be imposed with an SFR Fee.

An exception will be made to teams if a player enters into a contract with the team either during or before the end of the 2023 LEC Season Finals. In this instance, the SFR Spend will be reduced by one-fifth of the SFR Threshold or the actual salary amount; whichever is lower.

The policy will be introduced starting from the 2024 LEC Global Contract Start Date (21 November 2023), with the first cycle running until the 2024 LEC Global Contract End Date (18 November 2024).

The GEF is committed to working with partners worldwide to unlock the full potential of esports for a brighter future for all in our global community,” Paul J. Foster, CEO of the Global Esports Federation, said.

The GEF Vice President, Adrian Lismore, joined the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, at the 10th Commonwealth Youth Ministers’ Meeting in London.
