MGM Resorts International Honored With National Council On Problem Gambling's Corporate Social Responsibility Award
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Company’s GameSense program is already transforming how the industry promotes responsible gambling

CLEVELAND, July, 2018  — MGM Resorts International was honored with the National Council on Problem Gambling’s (NCPG) Corporate Social Responsibility Award Friday at the organization’s 32nd National Conference on problem gambling in Cleveland.

The award – which recognizes an organization that demonstrates an outstanding commitment to social responsibility related to problem gambling – was presented in recognition of the company’s ground-breaking responsible gambling program: GameSense. Launched nationwide at MGM Resorts’ properties late last year, GameSense integrates responsible gambling education and support into the company’s industry-leading guest service culture. It’s all designed to help guests make informed decisions and keep gambling fun.

“We are thrilled to receive this honor from the National Council on Problem Gambling and can’t thank them enough for the incredible work they do in raising awareness in the problem gambling community,” said MGM Resorts Chairman & CEO Jim Murren. “GameSense has been a tremendous success and is already transforming the way the industry approaches responsible gambling. MGM Resorts is at the forefront of driving the conversation and culture around this important issue, and GameSense ensures responsible gambling education is at the heart of our guest service model at every one of our casinos – worldwide.”

NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte added that his organization is pleased to recognize MGM Resort’s innovation and leadership with GameSense with its Corporate Social Responsibility Award.

“We’re so proud to congratulate MGM Resorts on this achievement,” Whyte said. “Their steadfast support, innovation and leadership in taking GameSense companywide has set the standard in the casino industry. They have raised the bar considerably and – most importantly – greatly benefited their employees and customers.”

GameSense comes alive through personal interactions between guests and trained staff based at each property’s M life Rewards desk. In addition to speaking to trained employees, guests are also utilizing interactive GameSense touchscreens and picking up educational materials and other resources. This unprecedented commitment to integrating responsible gambling education into the company’s entire guest service model is unlike anything the industry has seen before.

Alan Feldman, Executive Vice President of Global Industry Affairs, said the response to the company’s responsible gambling efforts has been outstanding, adding that guests and employees alike have enjoyed and benefited from having positive, open and proactive conversations about how to gamble responsibly.

“In less than a year, GameSense has sparked more than 350,000 positive conversations and interactions with guests, and the numbers continue to grow at an unprecedented rate. With GameSense, MGM Resorts has expanded and enhanced the scope of responsible gambling culture beyond anything the industry has ever seen,” Feldman said. “The program’s goal of building stronger and more sustainable guest relationships has been incredibly successful, and we look forward to driving the conversation and integrating this program wherever our company operates.”

ABOUT GAMESENSE
Integrated nationwide by MGM Resorts in late 2017, GameSense enhances awareness and education about responsible gambling for players and guests and, in doing so, raising the standards within the industry. The program was developed by the BCLC, British Columbia’s provincial gambling corporation and encourages players to adopt behaviors and attitudes that reduce the risk of developing gambling disorders. This includes setting and sticking to personally allocated time and monetary limits for gambling, as well as being open and honest with family, friends and oneself when it comes to personal gambling habits.

GameSense has earned international recognition such as the World Lottery Association’s Best Overall Responsible Gambling Program (2010), and the U.S.- based National Council on Problem Gambling’s Social Responsibility Award (2015). In addition to being licensed at MGM Resorts casino properties, the program has been implemented by Connecticut Lottery, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and Canadian provinces Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

James currently serves as Chief Operating Officer for Morongo Casino Resort & Spa located in Cabazon, California and will be taking the helm at Foxwoods beginning August 12.

With over 25 years of highly successful Native American gaming resort operations experience, James is uniquely positioned to lead Foxwoods into its next evolution as the premier entertainment destination in the Northeast. His expertise and vision will help build on Foxwoods’ solid foundation and maximize the tremendous growth opportunities that lie ahead.

John perfectly represents our team’s values and beliefs, and we are ready to drive the future of Foxwoods together.”

“Foxwoods is the premier destination in the Northeast and a pioneer in the tribal gaming community, and I’m thrilled to be joining their stellar team,” said James. “Over the past 27 years, Foxwoods and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation have built a world-class resort casino with an unparalleled array of offerings for guests, and I look forward to working with the entire team to continue fortifying Foxwoods’ position as one of North America’s premier resort destinations.”

Prior to joining Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, James was Chief Executive Officer for Gila River Gaming Enterprises, Inc. where he led the tribe’s three casinos in achieving the highest recorded earnings in the State of Arizona. He also held chief executive roles at Seminole Gaming, Inc. and Pechanga Resort and Casino. Additionally, James served as a Vice President and General Manager for various successful Station Casinos properties in Las Vegas.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, James attended the University of Nevada where he graduated from the accounting program. As he assumes his new role at Foxwoods, he and his wife Giselle will be relocating to Mystic, Connecticut.

AG Brief is delighted to confirm that the Ministry of Economy and Finance Secretary of State, H.E. Nguon Sokha, will give the opening address at the much-anticipated Mekong Gaming Summit in September.

The conference is due to take place at the Sofitel Phnom Penh from 10-11 September and has the full support of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF), one of the agencies responsible for gaming regulation, along with the Ministry of the Interior. Both will eventually form the Gaming Management Committee to implement and oversee the Kingdom’s new gaming legislation.

H.E. Mey Vann, director general of the MOEF, will also be speaking at the summit, and we expect to shortly also confirm the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration, Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations of Myanmar.

In addition to these addresses from government officials, the summit will provide investing and market perspectives on the land-based and online gaming opportunities in the key markets of Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.

Other highlights of the event include a special gala cocktail reception hosted by the capital’s premier casino and entertainment resort – NagaWorld – on the evening of Tuesday 10th September. Delegates will also be able to meet companies able to assist in setting up their businesses in the region at a table-top exhibition space in the Sofitel Grand Ballroom foyer.

Immediately following the conference, there will be an optional tour to Sihanoukville for those who would like to see the sheer scale of development in Asia’s new gambling mecca for themselves.

Wazdan Receives Swedish Certification, Expanding Their Reach Further Through the Nordics

Wazdan Receives Swedish Certification, Expanding Their Reach Further Through the Nordics
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Wazdan is thrilled to announce the confirmation of their Swedish certification, enabling them to offer their games through Swedish operators.

Confirmed this month, Wazdan is now fully certified in Sweden and have already enabled their games through their existing Swedish partners, including Kindred, Mr Green, Hero Gaming, and more.

The Swedish Gambling Authority began to accept license applications under a new law, earlier this year, in an effort to liberalise the gambling market and open it up to private actors. Before this, gambling activities were state-owned and had come under criticism from the European Commission for being monopolised. Online, however, under EU law, Swedes had been able to play at online casinos for some time, but finally, in 2018, the government agreed to follow Denmarks lead: quash the monopoly and open up the market. The Swedish Gambling Authority is the authority tasked with ensuring the legality, safety and reliability of the Swedish gaming and gambling market. Their role is to provide consumers with the tools for fair gaming by maintaining a transparent and balanced gaming market, as well as reducing the potentially harmful social effects.

Opening up the market is not just good for game producers, like Wazdan, it is also positive for the players. The main objective under the gambling re-regulation is to create a safer market, with particular focus placed on improving consumer protection, and game security. With this, players will be able to pause their accounts easily, and there will be increased punishments for illegal gambling activities and match-fixing.

Wazdan continues to grow in the regulated markets, with licenses including the MGA, the UKGC, Romania and Curacao. The company is also certified to offer their products in Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Market expansion comes at a great time for Wazdan and their operator partners, with the company recently announcing a slew of new game title releases, including Lucky Fish, Relic Hunters™ and the Book of Faith, Lucky Reels, Space Spins, Magic Stars 5, Space Gem™, Juicy Reels, and Magic Stars 6, as well as their main game of the year, Larry the Leprechaun.

“We are excited to announce our Swedish certification, which allows us to strengthen our position in the Swedish market and expand the reach of our games through our existing operators. The Swedish certification opens up doors for our team to increase what we offer our partners, and also to develop new relationships with operators to bring Wazdan high-quality games to the Swedish players,” says Andrzej Hyla, Head of Sales at Wazdan.
